Manifest

A place to experiment with recursive ecosystem improvement.

We’re here to do recursive eco improvement. Recursive self-improvement is very hyped in AI these days. But it can fail in multiple ways, because if self-improvement does not adapt to the environment, something’s got to give.

I, as PlayfulProcess LLC’s solo-entrepreneur, am building recursive.eco because I will to hope, and I want every step in that learning to be an authentic iteration towards recursive eco improvement. Even if I get it wrong. It is time for us to learn how to be our own size — not deflecting responsibility, but also not falling into hubris, just tending to what comes up.

What we hold to

Principles

Grammar — a symbolic system people use to orient themselves and make sense: a deck, a book, a set of stories, a playlist. Not the territory; a map. Useful only insofar as it helps the reader move through what is actually there.

None crowned — atheism and Shaiva Tantra, materialist science and indigenous cosmologies can each fit the data of reality and still be explained, ritualized and practised very differently. The point is not to find the right grammar but one that adapts well to the life you are living. Here they sit side by side.

Build what is adaptive, compost what is maladaptive — adaptive is what serves the long-term wellbeing of a person and their community: the capacity to perceive accurately, choose freely, stay in contact with what is real. Sometimes it feels like work in the short term. Maladaptive is what pleases short-term and harms long-term, often invisibly — most of what is dangerous about AI in sense-making is not catastrophic failure but the quiet substitution of a short-term feel-good for a long-term capacity. Naming it is not the principle; building the first and composting the second is. Every risk on AI Risks & Safer Containers is named in those terms, with a paper or a case to read.

Selectively permeable — a living cell is not open; it lets nutrients in and keeps toxins out. We open the grammars, the infrastructure of sense-making, and gate the AI stack, because an open AI-tool stack is too easily optimized for engagement.

Structure — freedom is not the absence of structure but the presence of the right structure. Meaning systems need time to sediment into communal ones before cooperation can grow from them: not so rigid they harden, not so loose they dissolve. Holding contradictory views maturely beats polarizing toward certainty or dissolution.

Alone is enough — you can work with a grammar by yourself, for yourself, indefinitely, and that is a complete use of this place. Community is a longer invitation for those who want to share what they made, never an expectation.

Best efforts, not promises — We do not promise expert review of every grammar published here. Some content we feature have community holders and experts who deserve more direct say in this work than one person can offer, which is why we cater the whole recursive.eco experience to support community editing.

We are all learning to act in our right size: not deflecting responsibility, not falling into hubris; and we hope the community will hold us accountable.
